Great Backyard Bird Count, February 12-15, 2010

This weekend is the annual Great Backyard Bird Count, sponsored by Cornell University’s Laboratory of Ornithology. Birders across the country count birds in parks or fields or their own back yards, and then report the numbers on-line.
 [What-cheer, what-cheer of the Northern Cardinal]
It's catching on! The number of reports sent in by citizen-scientists increased by 10% over last year, to nearly 94,000 checklists. Although it may seem that crows are everywhere [Caw, caw of the American Crow], the beautiful Northern Cardinal appears at the top of the list nearly every year, far above the crow [Northern Cardinal]. Akin to the Christmas Bird Count, this nationwide tally gives a snapshot of the state of the birds, helping scientists understand the distribution of bird populations, and alerting them to the possible decline of species.
Put your knowledge of your common local birds to work; join the count! You can start right this minute—and send in your count on-line. [Typing at a keyboard]
