[Songs of the boreal forest]
When thousands upon thousands of birds migrated through here in spring, many were on their way to the boreal forest of the north, to breed then feed their young. Let’s follow them to this vast band of spruce and poplar that extends from coast to coast across Alaska and Canada. Come with me to North America’s “songbird bread basket” where, for a brief time, it teems with song!

Ah! there’s the fluty harmonics of the Swainson’s Thrush,
[Swainson’s Thrush]
…the long clear whistles of the White-throated Sparrow;
[White-throated Sparrow]
(Ornithologist Roger Tory Peterson described these whistles as “ohhhhh, sweeeeet Ca-na-da”);
… the eerie wailing of the Common Loon.
[Common Loon]
What about this sound? [mosquito] Yes, that’s what many birds feed upon in the boreal forest, a land of abundant insects, and rich sounds…. [boreal forest songs]
