Wilson’s Warbler II – Wintering in Belize
Written by Bob Sundstrom
This is BirdNote!
[Wilson’s Warbler call notes mixed with tropical background: Adam’s recording]
In early September, BirdNote introduced you to a tiny Wilson’s Warbler as it began its long migration from Washington, where it nests, to the Central American country of Belize, where it winters. It’s December now, and the bright yellow warbler with the natty black cap returned safely to its winter home a month ago. Navigating by the stars, this ¼-ounce bird made a series of night flights spanning more than 2500 miles. The Wilson’s Warbler returned to precisely the same spot in the same coffee plantation where it has wintered each year. [Wilson’s Warbler call notes mixed with tropical background: Adam’s recording]
The warbler flits among the dark green coffee trees, now covered in richly scented white blossoms. Taller trees that shade the coffee are a winter home for other migrants from North America, like Summer Tanagers and Baltimore Orioles. Other birds live here year round. Calling from the tree tops [Keel-billed Toucans calling], a resident Keel-billed Toucan flashes its massive, multi-colored bill.
By buying shade-grown coffee, coffee-drinkers aid the success of more than 150 species of migratory birds, including the Wilson’s Warbler. Find out how at BirdNote.org. [Wilson’s Warbler song]
