Laura Cruz

Laura Cruz grew up in the Puerto Rican countryside, just southwest of El Yunque, the only tropical rainforest under the US Forest Service. Her childhood was spent among chickens, pigs, cows, and the occasional Puerto Rican parrot, the latter being a critically endangered species. After moving to the Pacific Northwest in 2009 and noticing the lovely plumage of Red-winged Blackbirds near Lake Sammamish, Laura grew interested in birdwatching. She and her then-boyfriend (now-husband) bonded over stalking birds of all kinds and listening to BirdNote during their morning commute. It was the BirdNote intro music that first caught Laura's ear and became the highlight of her morning.
Aside from enjoying nature in its many forms, Laura enjoys genealogy, public speaking, and drawing like there's no tomorrow. She's passionate about using technology as a vehicle to connect communities, share information, and make education accessible to all. Laura organized and managed our first Reddit AMA /Ask Me Anything, with Gordon Orians talking about blackbirds. She is the technology advisor to the board.
Laura lives in Ballard with her husband and their cat Black Pearl, who also enjoys watching birds to an obsessive degree.

Here she is, enjoying a day on Rattlesnake Ridge!
