Visit a completely undisturbed ecosystem, where all the creatures we hear are all native to the land, and have coexisted and continued to evolve together for thousands of years. No animal is stepping on the communications of another animal. No two birds sound alike. It’s the final episode of Sound Escapes, from BirdNote.

Sound Escapes - Nightfall on the Zabalo

Written by Ashley Ahearn and Mark Bramhill

AA: This is BirdNote.

The Zabalo River in Ecuador is teeming with life - and you can hear it.

[Soundscape fades up]

Here’s Gordon Hempton, the sound recordist who captured the soundscape we’re listening to now:

GH: This is a completely undisturbed ecosystem. The creatures that we hear are all native to this land. No animal is stepping on the communications of another animal. No two birds sound alike. There are so many different sonic expressions. And as the light fades during the evening, we hear the sequences. It’s almost like a roll-call.

[SOUNDSCAPE]

AA: You’ve been listening to a sneak preview of a special production from BirdNote. You can hear the full podcast - with Gordon Hempton’s immersive recordings from all over the world - at BirdNote Dot Org Slash Sound Escapes.

I‘m Ashley Ahearn.
