Horacio obtained his PhD at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada 1991. Since then he has worked at CICESE, where he is a Full Researcher at the Biología de la Conservación department. He teaches advanced Statistics, Philosophy of Biological Sciences, and Ecology and Evolution courses.
Dr. de la Cueva has published 55 scientific articles in journals such as Aquatic Mammals, The Auk, Bioscience, Canadian Journal of Zoology, Ciencias Marinas, The Condor, European Journal of Wildlife Research, Huitzil, Journal of Field Ornithology, Journal of Experimental Biology, Journal of the Southwest, Journal for Nature Conservation, Latin American Journal of Aquatic Mammals, Latin American Journal of Aquatic Research, Marine Ornithology, Ornithological Applications, PeerJ, Revista Mexicana de Biodiversidad, The Southwestern Naturalist, Therya, Waterbirds, and Western Birds.
Dr. de la Cueva has presided over two doctoral dissertations and 42 master’s theses. Species and topics included in his work are Belding’s savannah sparrow, black rail, brown booby, California gnatcatcher, California least tern, California quail, Craveri’s murrelet, rock wren, magnificent frigatebird, least sandpiper, surf scoter, Laysan albatross, Ridgway’s rail, western sandpiper, bottlenose dolphin, California sea lion, Cuvier’s beaked whales, elephant seal, Guadalupe fur seal, vaquita, whale shark, hawkbill sea turtle, California spadefoot toad, the marine isopod Erichsonella crenulata, sea urchin and lobster fisheries, and vernal pools.
Dr. de la Cueva produced Electronic Smoke Signals, a radio programme at the campus station citr, and volunteered occasionally at cfro co-op radio in Vancouver, he publishes a fortnightly column, Musa Verde, at La Jornada Baja California, and is an invited editor in La Jornada Ecológica, a monthly environmental supplement at La Jornada, a nationwide circulating newspaper in México.
Dr. de la Cueva’s conservation efforts include reintroducing the California Condor to Sierra San Pedro Mártir and the vaquita recuperation program. He is a founding member of Terra Peninsular AC, an ngo working on landscape conservation in Baja California, and of the Board and Scientific Committee of the Sonoran Joint Venture, an international partnership working to conserve the unique birds and habitats of the southwestern U.S. and northwestern Mexico.
