Reading Aloud About Birds: In Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, Janice McClintock uses this lesson to introduce her first-grade class to non-fiction reading. Students read aloud together from a book about birds and later add bird drawings and facts to their journals. (This drawing was done by an ESL student.) BirdNote stories are a great resource to learn new facts and to see photos of the birds.
Birds of Alaska: Jessie Soder teaches a year-long unit to elementary school students in Gustavus, Alaska, using multiple resources including BirdNote. Students take field trips, collect data, research Alaskan birds, keep individual bird lists, write journals, and publish a guide at the end of the year.
