Juvenile American Dipper

By Gregg Thompson

© Gregg Thompson View Large

A juvenile American Dipper (adult dippers show a clean dark gray body with black bill). Note the long claws this species uses to grip underwater rocks as it forages for insects and eggs in turbulent mountain streams. Dippers frequently bob their bodies up and down while out of the water (find out why).
